Brittania Mine

The mine is about an hour away from Vancouver on the way to Whistler. In combination with the Goldschmidt congress it was possible to go there (and I couldn't miss that opportunity). The mine is not active anymore and the former processing mill is a museum now. They have a problem with metals being flushed into the bay closeby so they have to control all the water going through the mine and clean the ground water with special facilities.

The processing mill - later you can see the inside.

We went to one of the tunnels and on the walls you can clearly see what ore you can find in the mine ;) Too easy for geologists I guess - copper and iron mainly.

One of these transport tunnels.

The mill from the inside - not in the best condition (last production was in the 1970s)

And the nice scenery around.

Vanvouver - beach at UBC I

Some pictures of the sunset this time far away in Vancouver ;)

Biking in Østmarka

One weekend in June (yes I am extremly back-blogging !!!) we went out for a biking tour - well it was biking and hiking with the bike since the biking trail was not completely continuous. It was a nice tour but I forgot to take a picture of the whole group (as usual Julia always goes for the landscapes and animals).

Mining in the Oslo region

Thanks to Enno and geocaching I now know that there are serveral iron and copper pits in the oslo region which are not in use anymore tody - we went to a few of them and also to the granite quarry where the material for the castle came from. One of these pits is now a refuge for bats - this is actually the coolest ;)

Hiking tour - Grua to Sørkedalen

This was a nice hike - fantastic weather and a very nice cabin to stay overnight right next to a lake with canoes ;)
The crew was French and German and we had a lot of fun!

Fjords and how to confuse your GPS

First the pictures of the Fjord and then the confusion ;)

Blubbblubb - we drowned - at least according to our navigation device. And no we do not drive a pickup it just was too tempting to change the car to something ridiculous.

Bergen

Just a few impressions of the city where is supposedly rains the most and where we unexpectedly had nice weather ;)

Bryggen - world heritage.

Bryggen - behind the shining front ;)

The romanic St. Mary's church - the oldest building in Bergen.

Rosenkrantz tower.

Håkon's Hall.

Borgund Stavkirke

This stave church is the most original one meaning that today it still looks like when it was built. The wood was cut in 1180 and supposedly shortly after, the church was constructed. The main reason why it was preserved is that the village never had enough money to renovate or extend the church.
