Godzilla

He moved in a few days ago. Didn't ask for permission but I guess that was a cultural misunderstanding - open door probably means that he is invited. Luckily he is very quiet so that's fine with me. He also doesn't like photo sessions so it was not easy to get a halfway decent picture of him.
We still have a few communication problems so I don't know his name but I just call him Godzilla (he must be a fighter since he lost part of his tail).

Wildlife in the Caatinga

Here a few more impressions of the natural and "man-made" wildlife you can meet in the Caatinga.
Goats and sheep are pretty much roaming around freely although there are a few fences especially close to roads.  People outside of the town live on mostly isolated farms where they keep their animals and grow a few vegetables. The roads are not paved and the further you get away from town, the worse the condition with really deep pot-holes. Many people cannot even afford a car and they go by moped on these roads. They also have the tendency to honk their horn every time they meet somebody. The past decade or so, the government has set up power supply lines so even the remotest place has electricity now. In addition, they all get treated water delivered to their homes which is stored in tanks.
As geologists, we have to make sure they understand what we're doing so that we can look for rocks on their land without them getting annoyed at us. Most people were quite  friendly and interested in what we're doing but the most frequent question was if we found any gold (although most of them were joking of course). It's a bit difficult to explain that they are actually living on some of the oldest parts of the South American continent, something which is far more valuable in geology than gold ;)

Not really wildlife but I love cacti!

Black vultures (called urubu here), the garbage men of the Caatinga feasting on a dead goat in this case. Unfortunately many people are not that considerate where they throw their waste so sometimes you have trash heaps where you can find venues (new word I learned today!) of black vultures as well.

This beauty just needed to be photographed too.

Super-cute almost new-born goatlings, the black one I almost took with me:

And last but not least a view into the distance ...

Offspring

Sorry for the lack of updates here recently - I wish I could say it was because I am enjoying life. Some people are doing their best to destroy my future ... I cannot be more specific at the moment (www never forgets and so on).

Da gewisse Mitmenschen ihr Möglichstes tun, um mir meine Zukunft kaputt zu machen ist es hier gerade etwas still. Tut mir leid. Kann leider auch nicht mehr über die momentane Situation schreiben.

My spot

This is my spot so leave me alone!

Bufo bufo I would assume; common toad; Erdkröte.

Little guy

Yeah, I am a spider freak but more than spiders I like those little creatures. Yes, I know I've posted pictures before but this one was really really tiny and cute.

Formation spider ball

Some time later the spider accumualation looked like this:

Not quite sure why they stay all on one spot ... wouldn't there be less chance of being eaten if they spread out ??? Anyway the tiniest bit of wind or touch makes them spread out in all directions which is quite funny.

Cuties!

And ye it's hard to get all of these hyperactive mini spiders into focus :)

Just a collection of more or less common visitors in the garden.

Little helper

Once a year, the compost heap needs some maintenance by moving all the rotten stuff away and getting out the good earth from below. It's usually not really my favourite kind of work but today I got a little "helper". Well at least the little fellow improved my mood although he was usually roaming around where I wanted to work.

Strange Santa

Came along, made a lot of noise while roaming around the shoes on the terrace and went to a corner. And the stupid people took him to a hideout of reed and leaves so he could continue his hibernation. I bet he just wanted to fill our shoes with goodies.

Hopefully he/she survives the winter. Luckily it isn't that cold yet.

Summer visitor

Although there are no frogs spawning in our pond, we always have a few staying around in summer.
This one came out for a photo shooting.

Normally the best you get is a picture of lots of plants where you have to search for the head.
The picture is from last year but the frog might possibly be the same.

May bug

Yeah I know, it's June already - time flies as usual. The cockchafer has been found in May though and was saved from drowning. I tried to clean it a bit before taking the picture but some of the pollen which has accumulated in the water stayed on it.

Intersting hairstyle!

This was attached to the fly-screen last night. It's the caterpillar of the garden tiger moth and apparently it has survived from last year and is supposed to pupate soon. What a cool thing!

More garden

Found this little guy while digging out some phlox. Quite interesting how they can bend their legs apparently into every direction.

And daffodils for the last time (nex time I'll show other flowers). They also come in quite a few varieties.

Action in the pond

Every spring, the small pond in the garden is full of alpine newts. It's quite entertaining to watch them but not so easy to take pictures without a water proof camera. The other day they didn't seem to care if the big shadows from above were dangerous or not so I got a few nice shots.
Male and female next to each other:

Another male coming along:

Take me!

Seconds later the female had enough and was gone leaving the two guys a little perplexed. Tough.

Circus frog

And those nasty people made it jump through the hose which is supposed to connect the water tank and the drill (and which they carried up the mountain together with the drill, the equipment, the petrol canister, and the 30l water tank - luckily without the water - just to find out on top that the drill head was too worn off to be used for hard rocks):

And that's ...

... what we think about you not having anything nice for us:

What you've got?

How disappointing - nothing to eat!

(Poor things - do they really need two of these clips in the ears?)
Found this while looking at field work pictures for my last paper.
