Did someone succeed in living on air only?

As usual, at the end of the month the rent has to be paid so that is the time when I am running around to get money from my German account via a cash machine. Then I have to pay in this cash at the post office. Of course there is a fee on withdrawing the money from the German account as well as when paying it in at the post office since I don't have an account there. One more month I can manage like this then my savings are used up (luckily I have a Mum who could support me - poor people who don't ). Last week I was told that I will get the money at the end of May (one more day left and for some reason I have the feeling that my post box will be empty tomorrow). So I guess I have to practice how to live on air only.

Is there a list of forbidden substances?

Well, there are these doping confessions on a huge amount of blogs (I am not putting in a list since it will not be complete and I lost track where it started anyway ;)).
I also have to admit that I am only capable of writing this blog because of doping (without I couldn't even write a single word) but I have serious problems understanding what is a forbidden substance and what is not. I think we agree that bread is not a dope since we need something to eat in order to survive right? So then I have to exclude alcohol on the dope list because a geoscientist (yes I am one) cannot exist without alcohol (any kind will do). Imagine a carpenter without a saw - impossible and that is the same for a geoscientist without alcohol ;)
Anyway my list of dopes:
any kind of camera and what is taken by it
nature including:
- moose and any other kind of creature (except for parasites, ticks, mosquitos and slugs which devour all your self-grown salad and vegetables in one night)
- flowers (preferably wild ones)
- mountains, lakes, beautiful landscapes ....
Norway
Alaska
snow, ice, cold ( preferably -40°C)
rocks and minerals
good music
I guess this could be continued to infinity but that will do for now.

Also hier meine Dopingliste:
- Blumen (bevorzugt wild wachsende)
- Berge, Seen, schöne Landschften
Norwegen
Alaska
Schnee, Eis, Kälte (-40°C bitte!)
Steine und Minerale
gute Musik

Definitely time for more nature pictures ;)

Nice weather, weekend, cold is almost gone - it was absolutley necessary to go out. Probably you can hike for all your life just around Oslo without going the same path twice and it is always so wonderful. Most of the time I was completely alone and for about 2 hours I met nobody except for two crazy Norwegians - one wanted to dig out a red currant shrub with a shovel (didn't look like he succeeded) and the other one (much younger could have been the son) sat on a rock next to him and it was obvious that he didn't feel comfortable with the action of his father ;) Everything is really green now and the blueberries are already on the bushes but of course very small.

Impressions of Oslo I

Recently I was asked by a friend to show more pictures of Oslo since I mostly have pictures of landscapes, flowers and animals, so I think I will continuously add some pics and make a series out of it ;).
I will start with this one and I think I don't have to say that Norwegians are proud of this institution. Anyway I hope that I will never ever see Kohl there ;)

sorry

I'm thinking about closing the blog. Since most news I could write about are bad news (like: still no money, still no ID, still no bank account, the girl who wanted to find an appartment with me got a room for herself without asking me ...) I don't see the sense of keeping up a blog without anything nice to tell. I will wait until the weekend - maybe I can mange to go on a hike and put in some pics (if not then I guess the blog is sensless).

17th of May

Well, in Germany today is the usually holiday but it was by chance at the same day of the Norwegian National holiday. Actually I don't like masses of people but for the first time I thought I really should go downtown and see what is going on so I met there with Luiza (from Romania). I think I never saw that many German flags in my life compared to the Norwegian ones I saw in just one day ;). It felt like whole Norway was on the streets but luckily there was no rush. They have some of these parades (and I am not really a fan of this) but we watched for some time. Then we wanted to check if the Royals really stand on their balcony and wave and they really do (although we didn't get too close to see faces ;)). Luiza took more pictures than I did and I am not really satisfied with what I got on my camera (just not really used to take pics of people).
But I also wanted to put in a few impression of Kongsberg which was THE silver town of Norway. The second evening we even ate in one of the mines called the King's mine. The whole Kongress was in the Mining Museum:

The third evening we could get a glimpse on the silver collection in the museum and they also have a very nice mineral collection (have to go there again very soon ;))

I know that the first pic is a little defocused but it was hard with the glass around and the light and I wanted to put it in anyway.

that wasn't really necessary

You probably all know that feeling: everything hurts and your body has approximately boiling temperature. Sleep is only possible within one hour periods - then you have to change your pyjama since it's as wet as if you jumped into the nearby lake.
No: neither the cold not the fever nor the stupid cough were really necessary for me to feel great.
Actually I wanted to put in a few pictures of Kongsberg (I spare you all the party pictures ;)) but this will have to wait until I feel somewhat better.

...

depressing: bikers passing by on the steep hill when you are really giving all you have in order to reach the top
motivating: fat girl walking with her bike which can be overtaken
depressing: bike is shifting gears itself (I need to buy one myself since this one is borrowed but ....WHEN DO I FINALLY GET SOME MONEY?)
motivating: I think I'm loosing weight (not that I really intended to)

there is conference starting wednesday and lasting til saturday so I will not be available

Grey Sky

Yes - I start getting picky. Since there are so many sunny, wonderful days a week why should I go out and take pictures when the weather doesn't play along? Besides I get enough sport biking to university ... it is nice in the morning since it is almost constantly downhill but on the way home ... (should get a white T-shirt with red dots on it ;))
Maybe there is another chance tomorrow ;)
To add at least a little sense to this post I will show you a picture of my first poster. Well, the content is pretty senseless since it is still about my diploma thesis but still - it looks nice ;)

Alaska survivors

well, I have to admit that there are still packed bags distributed randomly across my room. Haven't found the time to unpack everything. Today I wanted to change that at least a bit so I started with my big backpack and what fell out of it - a teabag: wild blackcurrant herbal tea. This was definitely put into the backpack during my time in Alaska. So I had the idea to take a picture of the Alaska veterans ;)
I would upload it but the blog is refusing so I guess this will have to wait. Here it is now ;)

In addition to the moose, the salt shaker and the recently found tea bag the AK flag, the T-shirts, the Lonely Planets and the pixee on my bunch of keys are still around.

By the way

For those who constantly want to know how I am : a few more weeks like what it is now and I am freaking out. I am not supersticious but somehow I have the feeling that some mysterious forces want to prevent me from doing this PhD. Well it is perfectly clear that every start is kind of hard and that there are so many things to organize and to adjust to - I was prepared (or at least I thought so ;))
When I came into the office today even Nina said that I am ill-starred (I admit I had to look that up in the dictionary :p).
1)Anyway I already told the story about the second application because there was no Norwegian reference number for the PhD position, so I officially had to apply again. Since my Mum's computer didn't want to accept the application as pdf I went to friends of us and sent the whole application to this administrative coordinator. So after being about 2 weeks in Oslo and the end of the second application deadline I get the message that nobody applied. Mysteries happen and e-mails get sent to the wrong people but at least my e-mail provider told me that the message was sent. Luckily nobody else applied so I could write another statement that I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to apply with the correct refernce number.
Who ever wrote three applications for the same position?
2) Everything in Norway works like this: contract -> residence permit and some kind of social security number -> bank account .... so of course I have to get this number and usually this office is crammed with people and you have to wait for hours since there is only one place for all people in Oslo. To shorten things the very nice secretary of the PGP contacted a guy who knows people at this office and therefore can make things faster. So I made an appointment with him on Monday at 9 am. Monday comes and after waiting for half an hour I just think well I could work as well (I didn't know his address so I couldn't try to find him). The second appointment is tomorrow - hopefully he will remember but this time I know where I can find him.
3) For every computer here you need a username and password otherwise you cannot use it. If you have a contract there is usually no problem to get this username. I didn't have a contract when I came so I got a guest login and was told that it is valid for two weeks and then I can get an elongation. The woman (I cannot really call her admin since she is far less) refused to already apply for a premanent use name since I didn't have a contract yet and it didn't help that I told her that I will get it in any case. Ten days later when I try to log in ... my guest account has been disabled. So I have to find out that it is valid for only 10 days and that I have to get a complete new account which meant that all the files I had under the other login are lost, too. Since the woman is so slow and I don't have a real username yet I have to do this guest login procedure probably 2 to 3 more times and I cannot install programs because I am not allowed to put them on C and if I put them in any other folder they are lost ...("(§$U=$)(§=$()
Btw. that woman filled out a form with my birthday and name and I had to sign it and she said I should check if everything is correct so I read the birthdate aloud ... 17th of February is ok (she wrote 17.02 - at least that' what I thought ;))... a minute later she comes back ... were you born in February or in March?
I wonder how some people get their jobs and how they can keep them ?

Stöckchen aufgegessen ;)

Alke sent me this questionnaire to fill out. It is in German and I will not translate it. Statistics say that 99% of the people reading this blog are German anyway ;)

Öfter habe ich gesehen: Bad Boys I und II, Ice Age, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Starsky & Hutch, The Fast and the Furious und 2 Fast..., Terrence Hill und Bud Spencer Filme vor allem der mit dem Buggy (come with me for fun in my dune BUGGY lalalalalala) bestimmt einige mehr

5. Ein Film, aus dem Du regelmäßig zitierst

also regelmäßig zitiere ich bestimmt nichts .. höchsten vielleicht They Call me Trinity: Father Tobias: Welcome brothers - Bud Spencer: How does he know that we are brothers? Bud: Do you see anything Brother Lookout? - All clear Brother Sheriff.

16. Popcorn?

17. Wie oft gehst Du ins Kino?

Also gerade gar nicht und das letzte Mal ist auch schon eine Weile her. Davor so alle paar Monate mal.

18. Welchen Film hast Du zuletzt im Kino gesehen?

Miami Vice.

19. Welches ist Dein Lieblingsgenre?

Action, action , action!

21. Welchen Film hättest Du lieber niemals gesehen?

The Chronicles of Riddick - der war ja soooo schlecht.

Small Tour

It's time for a few more pictures! The original idea was to find a hiking trail along one of the fjords close to Hønefoss. However that was not really easy since there are either roads or railroad tracks right next to the water and if there is actually some area left out, there are houses and all the private properties. Next time I will do a hike described in the book - that's safer ;)
Anyway, I had the chance to take a few pictures:
